Minority Persons Empowerment Program (MPEG)
Established in 2010, Minority Persons Empowerment Program is a community platform that was created by community members who regularly met in restaurants and hook up spaces. Members would mobilise and talk about a wide array of issues including health, HIV and their social determinants. With support from other more organised community platforms, MPEG collaborated with the National Organisation of Peer Educators (NOPE) in the establishment of a Drop-in Service Centre in Thika popularly known as SASA Centre
Mission: To provide information and education awareness for MSM wellbeing and sexual reproductive health rights
Vision: To advocate for MSMs on sexual reproductive health wellbeing, psychosocial and economic empowerment.
MPEG's focus areas include;
- Sexual reproductive health services
- Psychosocial support
Our geographical focus is Limuru, Githurai, Kiambu, Ruiru, Juja, Thika, Kenol, Muranga, Saba Saba, Nyeri, Embu and Meru. Whilst MPEG primarily deals with HIV programming for MSM (Men who have Sex with Men) and MSM Sex Workers (MSW), Lesbian, Bisexual and Queer women have also accessed our clinic for dental-dams, female condoms and STI management as well as to socialize in a safe space.
We seek to broaden our scope of coverage, in order to reach and strengthen the capacity of nascent SOGIE groups in peri-urban and rural areas. Our ultimate goal is to grow and establish a cluster distinct to Central Kenya.
