Artists For Recognition and Acceptance (AFRA) Kenya was established in 2008 by two queer women, Cate Kamunde and Rose Wanjiku, who held their first event to introduce AFRA in Liberty Hall Pangani. It is currently the only organization in Kenya that incorporates arts within LBQ women organising.
Gay Kenya Trust (GKT) was formed in 2006, and is a human rights and media advocacy organization for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Queer persons, committed to the defense of their civil liberties, through community education, opinion publications and legal petitions that redress discriminatory processes denying LGBQ people safety, dignity and equal participation in society.
Founded in 2009 by a group of male sex workers living positively, Health Options for Young Men on HIV/AIDS/STI (HOYMAS) is a Community based organization registered by the Ministry of Social Services and Gender. HOYMAS serves male sex workers and young men and MSM with practical knowledge on safe sex, preventive materials distribution, general information and also economic empowerment.
In 1999, Ishtar-MSM was registered with the Ministry of Social Services as a self support group dealing explicitly with MSM issues. In 2002, Ishtar upgraded its registration to Community Based Organisation. Since then, Ishtar has developed strong allies through partnerships and networks, and is one of the founding members of the Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya (GALCK).
Queerhive is a youth-focused, social support and advocacy organization for Lesbian, Bisexual,
Queer womxn & Gender Non-Conforming folk (LBQGNC) in Kenya. Formerly Kenya Campus Lasses Association (KCLA) which mainly focussed on LBQ womxn, it was re-structured in 2018 to reflect and address the dynamic needs of our current membership which comprises of a significant percentage of gender non-conforming and nonbinary persons as well as LBQ womxn.
Established in 2010, Minority Persons Empowerment Program is a community platform that was created by community members who regularly met in restaurants and hook up spaces. Members would mobilise and talk about a wide array of issues including health, HIV and their social determinants.
Minority Women in Action (MWA) was formed in the year 2006, following a conference organized by Urgent Action Fund and partners that brought together Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) individuals in East Africa. During this conference, it was noted that despite the overwhelming representation SOGIE issues from organisations, Lesbian, Bisexual and Queer (LBQ) women issues were highly ignored.
LEHA is an LBQ organization in Central Kenya Region whose aim is to advocate for all LBQ persons in central Kenya region against discrimination, human rights violation and have access to quality health care. LEHA implements programs that are innovative, adaptive and targeted; that utilize of existing structures; interventions that are evidence-based and that encompass results-based monitoring and evaluation and participatory approach. LEHA continues to utilize communication, education, outreach and social mobilization activities to drive and sustain increased demand for services and reduce social, economic and cultural barriers that prevent community access. LEHA is driven by a team of passionate, dedicated and young LBQ professionals.
