CELEBRATING AND HONOURING ALI ANITA CHEGE
It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Ali Anita Chege early morning of 31st August 2021 at The Coast General Hospital after a long-fought illness. Anita was a member of Pema Kenya, a Lookin In Looking Out (LILO) & Integrated Leadership Module (ILM) Facilitator, and a member of the Violence Prevention and Response Team. She dedicated her life as a human rights defender working for the Gender and Sexual Minority persons in Mombasa County and eventually became the security focal person from the coastal region to the Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya (GALCK).
Anita was strong and tireless in her fight to defend and support members of her community who are marginalized and discriminated against by homophobia, transphobia, and misogyny for decades. Having faced numerous traumas and hardships herself, Anita pulled knowledge from her experiences to help build and strengthen the community she was part of and which was part of her. Her work and passion for the community will forever be a shining light and a legacy of who she was as a person.
We send our deepest sympathies to Anita’s family, friends, colleagues, the Kenyan LGBTQ+ community, and the GALCK Coalition that has lost one of its leaders. Her work and passion for the community will forever be a shining light and a legacy of who she was as a person. May her soul rest in Power!
